Sponge rubber is similar to solid rubber in relation to the use of basic polymers and fillers. Ozone,
heat, sunlight, excessive cold temperatures, acids, oils, all affect the life of Sponge in approximately
the same manner as solid rubber. As the name Sponge implies, tensile strength is not inherent nor is
it important...as primary usage of Sponge is cushioning, weather-stripping, insulation, or sound and
vibration dampening.
Sponge rubber is available in a wide choice of firmness, several types of cell structure and the wide
range of basic Elastomers. Open Cell Sponge rubber is chemically expanded by a process quite
similar to baking. An activating agent is introduced into the raw compound. In molding, heat is
applied, which produces gas, which in turn expands the rubber, filling out the mold. Open Cell
Sponge parts are universally used for sound deadening, cushioning, gasketing and vibration
isolation.
There are many situations where the use of adhesive coated sponge rubber saves a great deal of
time and effort on production line assemblies. Ready-to-use. with an easy peel-off backing it
eliminates the need for any activating agents. Available in rolls as shown below or can be furnished
in strips. Especially helpful for applications to glass and metal. Fabricated die-cut parts are
extremely popular in this material.
Sponge rubber. Open Cell, plain or with fabric reinforcement, is processed by our die-cutting
department for gaskets of an unlimited variety of sizes and shapes. Fifty years of experience in
designing and manufacturing. combined with our modern machinery. enables us to provide you with
a complete service. You can select from hundreds of stock dies or we can economically prepare a
custom die for your specific requirement.

Ensolite® Closed Cell Sponge
The unique structure of Closed Cell Sponge rubber makes this product unequaled as an insulating
and shock absorbing material for countless scientific, industrial, sports and household uses. Closed
Cell Sponge rubber is an expanded compound made from a synthetic polymer. It is made in soft,
medium and firm grades. Individually sealed cells containing inert nitrogen give this material the
characteristic of moisture resistance, ranging from absolute to 5% maximum absorption, depending
upon the stock and method of testing. The product is normally supplied in sheet farm which may be
die-cut, slit or laminated to other materials.
Ensolite® can meet a long list of specific application needs, giving you varying combinations for
flotation/insulation/cushioning shock absorption. Engineering data showing you 21 different Ensolite
types to meet your requirements is readily available through our sales department. Available in
sheets or rolls.
